Leading the Blind

On February 18th, 2011, our lives were changed forever when our son Christian Taylor Buchanan entered the world. He was born with a bilateral cleft palate and lip and almost completely blind. This blog is the story of his life, the joys we share, the challenges we encounter, and the amazing and trying journey ahead of our family!

Please Don't Run From Kids With Special Needs

I took the boys to a new indoor playground this week and had an experience that I wanted to talk about. When we got to the playground, there were lots of kids there. Of course several of them noticed Christian, which is fine. He was born to stand out in a crowd, not fit in. I don't mind that.

Of course there were kids saying things, nothing mean really, about Christian, just noticing him and asking questions. I heard a few parents shush their kids and tell them to be nice. Fair enough. We played for a little bit and as we played, I noticed that slowly, parents were trickling out with their kids. Maybe it was coincidence and they really did have to leave, but after about 30 or 45 minutes, we were left alone in the play area with only the kids we had come with.

I'm not insinuating that I know that this was on purpose, that these people were leaving to avoid us, but I am saying that I have learned quiet a bit about human nature since Christian has been born.

Being a Mom is a Real Job

Once I graduated, I was so, so happy. Not only because all the exhaustion of law school while raising kids was over, but ...

Surgery As Christian Gets Older

For your enjoyment, I have scattered some photos throughout this blog of a stop the boys and I made on Wednesday. These icicles were hanging all over the rocks lining the road on our drive home from therapy. It's been arctic cold temps here so these have formed from the water expanded as it freezes and being forced out of ...

I Am A Self Proclaimed Helicopter Mom

Spend about three seconds on the internet and you will find someone who is offended about the way you raise your kids. They will probably be strangers who don't know you, your situation, or your kids, but they will surprisingly have all the answers to your life. ??I've read a few articles about helicopter moms and how this is such ...
